October/ November News

Hi all fellow backyard chicken lovers. This month we focus on some issues our newer renters and coop owners have experienced and welcome Everton Park State School to our roost as the first school to buy their own chicken package for their Yr 7 students! Never happened in my day. The only animal contact we had was Yr 10 Biology frog disecting - yuck.

I would also like to promote our wonderful REFERRAL PROGRAM - a way that you can get some great vouchers for FREE!!!

Sue's Double Yolker
A very exciting moment occurred when Sue from 17 Mile Rocks reported that she had a double yolked egg from one of her girls. Well done Sue! This is a first from one of our clients. It must be the love....Mind you, if you saw Sue's garden, you would understand why her ladies are so happy. I hope you enjoyed your omelet Sue, albeit tiny!

Feed and Care Pack Reminder
It is time for some of you to order your next round of feed, grit and straw - or Feed Pack. Also, it will be soon time to do your seasonal de-licing and flea dusting. If you haven't ordered your Care Pack, why not do so when you order your Feed Pack? It can be delivered at the same time saving you $12.50. It's cheaper than the pet shop and we deliver the next day if needed. Simply order online or by phone. No more barnyard boots for your fine urban vehicles - leave the mess and bother to us!

Why Do I Get Weird Looking Eggs?*
Young chickens' bodies can take a while to create good sized eggs with strong robust shells. In the first month or so, you may get some odd looking deposits - see through soft shelled ones, a baggy membrane etc. This can be perfectly normal so don't be too alarmed. As long as you are providing a lot of egg grit and adore your chickens, you are helping them in the best way, with the rest, up to them. If the trend lasts for longer than a month, there could be something wrong with your bird so call us for more details.

Scrub Turkeys
These delightful birds play second fiddle in the pecking order with chickens and often will be chased away by your girls. They are after any spare grain or scraps so please be vigilant. If a scrub turkey is eating a lot of the chickens' left over feed (this can happen when the chickens free range a lot and prefer the taste of yummy grubs etc) perhaps decrease the amount you are feeding so there is less likelihood of the turkeys hanging around and entering the coop. We had an incident of a broken egg with a client and are wondering if the scrub turkey did it!

Spreading the City Chicks Word
City Chicks is a niche business and needs your help. As more and more of you sign up to enjoy the 'eggs-perience' of having backyard chickens, you will begin to see why I have become so passionate about spreading the word concerning these wonderful egg laying pets. They follow you, look for you, lay eggs for you, even talk to you and respond to their names. (I think mine talk to me) So, can you share your 'egg-citing' experience with your friends? If you refer some friends and they take up a rental or purchase a package, you get a 'special' thank you - all for simply telling others how much fun you are having.

Joke Competition
This closes at the end of the month, so please enter if you wish to win a farm animal wind chime. Entries can be submitted to enquiries@citychicks.com.au.
